Stanford Data Science (SDS) is a dynamic and rapidly growing unit within the VP/Dean of Research. POSITION SUMMARY:

Stanford Data Science (SDS) Community Manager is responsible for operational planning and execution of key SDS center program activities including research programs, events, marketing, and web communications.  This position is responsible for successful planning, management, execution, communications, financial reporting, and impact reporting for all activities.  This position reports to the SDS Executive Director and works with all SDS staff and faculty as well as manages contracts with other internal organizations (Stanford Video, Stanford Conferences, Stanford Event Services, etc.) and external vendors (event planners, graphic designers, writers, production companies, PR agencies, and contractors).

 The ideal candidate must have excellent communication skills and enjoy working on teams with diverse backgrounds. Required skills include:

  • 5+ years of marketing and event management experience
  • Growth mindset, including comfort level with experimentation
  • Ability to solve problems and remove barriers
  • Good judgment, even in the face of ambiguity
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a Marketing or Communications discipline. 

Responsibilities:

  • Organize data science communities at Stanford
  • Plan and execute activities for SDS, SDS Centers and Women in Data Science at Stanford (WiDS@Stanford) that help advance the research agendas and community engagement goals. Activities may include: research, communication, marketing, events, such as seminars, conferences, and center meetings in partnership with relevant staff and faculty.
  • Plan and manage logistics, including registration and attendee tracking, presentation and materials support, and pre- and post- event evaluations. Procure and coordinate vendor services. Provide on-site event support. May research and provide recommendations for potential event locations and evaluate alternatives.
  • Create and implement marketing plans for SDS overall, as well as for each of the SDS research centers and WiDS@Stanford
  • SDS brand management, including sub-branding (if applicable) and regional event branding and associated marks.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration, and do outreach and recruiting for collaborators, including co-marketing.
  • Develop an editorial calendar and produce content to support an on-going cadence of communications to SDS stakeholders, year-round.  Determine appropriate metrics, tracking, and reporting.
  • Provide co-marketing support for sponsor and funder stewardship.
  • Source, vet, and manage appropriate contractors and agencies to execute the Marketing plan.
  • Source and assess technologies to increase Marketing operations effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Manage the budget, including monthly budget reconciliation

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success planning events
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability in problem-solving, taking initiative, judgment, and decision-making
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, time management, and customer services skills. Must be well-organized and detail oriented.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft offices suite and other online documents, such as Google docs
  • Ability to interact with a broad spectrum of contributing groups and customers

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Occasionally kneel/crawl, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, and grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21-30 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

The expected pay range for this position is $68,000 to $99,000 per annum.
